Amokgetswe. “O amokgwetse” (singular) or “Le amokgwetse” (plural) is Setswana for “You are welcome”.
Amokgetswe is a Kandelaar initiative that wants to extend a warm hand of South African hospitality to students from all over the world who comes to the PUK-campus of the North-West University.
Our aim – in co-ordination with the NWU’s International Students Office – is first of all to help international students adapt and truly feel at home during their stay in Potchefstroom. How do we do this? Amokgetswe has an appointed team of local and international students who:
Plan, co-ordinate and host regular social events throughout the year such as a wine and dine evening, or a typical South African braai (barbecue), where internationals can meet new people and make friends amongst other international students, as well as local students.
Provide basic information that may be helpful to make foreign students’ stay more pleasurable (e.g. information about housing possibilities, where to shop, how to go about town and explore the country, opportunities to get involved in local volunteer projects, etc).
Fascilitate affordable explorer trips that helps internationals to get to know South Africa and its history better. For instance: We orginize one-day trips to Soweto, Gold Reef City and the Apartheidsmuseum. We do weekend-stay-overs in Ikageng. We do hiking trails in the nearby Vredefort Dome – a declared World Heritage Sight. We arrange for weekend camping experiences at nearby game reserves like Pilanesberg, also visiting the Lost City.
We offer Kandelaar’s office as a “home on campus”, a place to meet and gather with friends. We hope that our office’s social area will soon be made accessible 24/7 to all international students who apply for automated electronic access.
As a byproduct of being involved with the project, we believe that local students will learn something valuable about being generous and hospitable towards strangers. For instance: by getting South African students involved as hosts who open their hearts to others, our aim is also get them in touch with the rich cultural diversity of our own rainbow-nation, and their own identities as a unique and much needed part of this diversity.
Last, but not least: as disciples of Jesus, we believe that hospitality is one of the important ways in which we are obedient to Christ’s call to follow Him and be humble servants to others (John 13:14-17). We are part of an ancient and rich faith tradition, in which we cheerfully find ourselves trying to live according to the graceful instructions from our Lord and King. One of these Kingdom-instructions has everything to do with welcoming others into our midst, as Jesus counsels us to invite others in as if we were actually giving shelter to Him: “I was a stranger and you invited me… I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:35, 40).
